Friday Night Lights: ALS is a unique kind of adversity for Jenks' Allan Trimble

JENKS — Allan Trimble reached out his left hand to pick up a 1-inch-thick paperback book on his desk, fighting to get his fingers and thumb to work together to accomplish a task that once required not even a thought, much less any level of concentration.

For the man who has won more state championships in 21 years at Jenks than anyone who has ever coached a high school football team in Oklahoma, basic acts like picking up a book or holding onto his keys are no longer simple.

Last summer, Trimble was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease.
